GrIFK Climbs to Second Place in Rankings Ahead of Final Tournament

This season saw the historic start for Women’s handball in our area, as nine clubs from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania joined forces to form the Baltic Sea League. The first games have now been played and the championship is led by Lithuanian and Finnish teams.

This coming weekend will see a game between Estonian side Mistra and the Finnish side Dicken. Mistra is currently holding the seventh position with one win and two loses. Dicken on the other hand is third having lost only one of four games. Mistra lost their last game in the domestic league. Dicken have been on a roll, winning their last four games.

“We did not take care of the ball in our last domestic game and have to improve on that if we want to compete with the fast and physical Finnish side. We know we have a big challenge ahead of us, but we are going to give our best and play hard in front of our home fans,” said Karmen Vaiksaar, who has scored the most goals (23 in three games) for the Estonian side in the Baltic League.

“Our goal is of course to win the game, but also to play a good quality game, with as little technical faults as possible. We want to keep a high tempo through the game and through tough defense score some easy fastbreak goals. We are looking forward to playing against a new opponent. It is always fun to play against foreign teams because you can never be sure what to expect. Hopefully we will play good handball and give the audience a thrilling game to watch,” commented Matilda Peitsaro, who has scored 15 goals in the Baltic League for the Finnish side.

After this Saturday’s game, there will be one more game in Estonia between GrIFK and Mistra next weekend and then the first historic champion of the Baltic Sea League will be decided in the Final tournament in Lithuania at the end of march.
